Snap Zoom

$5.00 $0.00

Snap Zoom is an easy way to quickly snap zoom (sometimes called crash or smash zoom) your way into and/or out of a shot.  Zoom in up to 600% with motion blur. It’s particularly useful and effective on 4k or higher resolution footage in a 1080p timeline.  Add dynamics to a montage by zooming in to just the area of focus, and then back out again.  You control the speed of the zoom, and the scale and position you’re zooming to or from.

FEATURES:

Zoom
Zoom in or out or both at the start and/or end of the effect.

Speed
Control how fast the snap zoom is.  From fast to insanely fast.

Scale & Position
Control the size and position that you’re zooming to or from.

Versatile
Snap Zoom is super easy to apply and adjust as a title overlay layer, but is best applied directly to a clip as an effect to best preserve resolution and sharpness.

COMPATIBILITY
Final Cut Pro X 10.4 or newer required

WHAT’S INCLUDED
Download includes the BretFX Snap Zoom effects & title overlay effects and instructions

OVERVIEW
BretFX Snap Zoom is a quick and easy way to snap zoom (sometimes called crash or smash zoom) your way into or out of a shot with a nice amount of motion blur along the way.  It’s particularly useful and effective on 4k or higher resolution footage in a 1080p timeline.  Add dynamics to a montage by zooming into just the area of focus, and/or back out again.  You control the speed of the zoom, and the scale and position you’re zooming to or from. Different variations on the zoom effect aim to fill a variety of needs and situations.

INSTALLATION
Double click the DMG file to mount the installer and agree to the license.

Double click the installer pkg to install the BretFX Snap Zoom effects. They will appear in both the Effects and Titles browsers under BretFX Snap Zoom.

APPLICATION AND USAGE
There are 3 different snap zoom effects, each available as either a Title overlay effect from the Titles browser or as an Effect from the Effects browser in FCPX.  Each is designed for slightly different purposes and applied differently:

EFFECT VERSIONS: the main upside fo using the effects versions is they will utilize all available resolution in your clips. You can scale a 4k or 8k clip in a 1080p timeline up to it’s native 1 to 1 pixel ratio with no loss of quality. The downside is it requires blading out the specific parts of the clip you wish to affect.

TITLE VERSIONS: the main upside fo using the title versions is versatility. They affect all visible layers beneath them and they can be stretched and moved around quite easily compared to the blading and trimming required of effect versions.  The downside is the resolution is tied to resolution of the timeline. If you’ve scaled a 4k clip back to 1080p size, the title versions of the effects will affect that clip as a 1080p clip and zooming too far in will result in a loss of sharpness.

BretFX Snap Zoom (effect version) Use the blade tool to slice out the part of the clip you wish to affect and drag BretFX Snap Zoom to the clip. By default Snap Zoom zooms in at the beginning of the clip, and back out at the end.  Either can be disabled. Adjusting the speed adjusts the length of both effects. Due to the possibility of having a zoom in and out in the same effect, there is a minimum length to the clip to see both.  If the clip is too short the zoom out will potentially not be seen or clipped. For short zoom in/out bursts, use the title versions of just the specific zoom in or zoom out effect.

BretFX Snap Zoom IN (effect version) Use the blade tool to slice out the part of the clip you wish to affect and drag BretFX Snap Zoom IN to the clip. It will immediately zoom from 100% scale to the scale you determine at the XY coordinates you determine. Speed controls the duration of the effect and it will remain at the set scale until the end of the clip.

BretFX Snap Zoom OUT (effect version) Use the blade tool to slice out the part of the clip you wish to affect and drag BretFX Snap Zoom OUT to the clip. It will start at the scale value you input and the XY coordinates you determine.  It will remain at that scale and position until the end of the clip where it will zoom out to 100% scale and centered. Speed controls the duration of the effect and it will remain at the set scale until the end of the clip. A faster speed means the zoom out will start later in the clip.

BretFX Snap Zoom (title version) Drag BretFX Snap Zoom to the timeline and place it above the clip where you wish the title effect to begin and drag it out to where you wish the title effect to end. By default Snap Zoom zooms in at the beginning of the title effect, and back out at the end.  Either can be disabled. Adjusting the speed adjusts the length of both effects. Due to the possibility of having a zoom in and out in the same title effect, there is a minimum length to the title effect to see both.  If the title effect is too short the zoom out will potentially not be seen or clipped. For short zoom in/out bursts, use the specific zoom in or zoom out title effects.

BretFX Snap Zoom IN (title version) Drag BretFX Snap Zoom IN to the timeline and place it above the clip where you wish the title effect to begin and drag it out to where you wish the title effect to end.  It will zoom from 100% scale to the scale you determine at the XY coordinates you determine for the length of the title effect. The duration is controlled by the length of the title effect itself.  Since the scale will return to normal after the title effect has ended, a common use for this is to zoom in at the END of a clip, possibly to cut to a close up, marrying the two as if they were shot that way as a single shot.   Snap Zoom In can also be used in rapid succession for a repetitive zoom you might use to accentuate a drum roll.  Snap Zoom IN is designed to be a very brief effect.  The amount of motion blur used will look out of place on too slow a move.

BretFX Snap Zoom OUT (title version) Drag BretFX Snap Zoom OUT to the timeline and place it above the clip where you wish the title effect to begin and drag it out to where you wish the title effect to end.  It will zoom from the scale you determine at the XY coordinates you determine to 100% scale and centered for the length of the title effect. The duration is controlled by the length of the title effect itself.  Since the scale will return to normal after the title effect has ended, a common use for this is to zoom out at the BEGINING of a clip, possibly transition from a close up to a wide shot, marrying the two as if they were shot that way as a single shot.   Snap Zoom OUT can also be used in rapid succession for a repetitive zoom you might use to accentuate a drum roll.  Snap Zoom OUT is designed to be a very brief effect.  The amount of motion blur used will look out of place on too slow a move.

CONTROLS
Not all controls are available in all effects.

Start / End Scale (available in BretFX Snap Zoom only)
This is the starting size of the image before the zoom effect begins.  It is also the ending size if you also elect to zoom out at the end of the effect.

Zoom In checkbox (available in BretFX Snap Zoom only)
Check this box to add a zoom at the beginning of the clip.

Speed (not available in Title effect versions of BretFX Zoom OUT or BretFX Zoom IN)
This affects how quickly the zoom happens. Smaller numbers are slower.

Scale
This is the effective size you’re going to zoom to, from or both depending on which effect you’re using.

Position X / Position Y
Controls the position you’re zooming to, from, or both depending on which effect you’re using.

Zoom Out checkbox (available in BretFX Snap Zoom only)
Check this box to invoke the zoom out at the end of the clip.

Easing (available only in Title effect versions of BretFX Snap Zoom OUT and BretFX Snap Zoom IN)
Controls both the acceleration / deceleration of the zoom. Available only in the title effect versions because they can potentially be very long, though it’s not recommended because the amount of motion blur used will look out of place on too slow a move.
