Parks and Re-Creation Split Screen Transitions is a fun and quirky set of 7 transitions for FCPX 10.4 or later in the style of the famous Parks and Recreation TV show open. Use them straight up as transitions, with or without text/titles, or place them one after the other to closely resemble the famous look of the intro. Now you can break up your program with short or extended split screen montages that will take you from one scene to the next, with or without titles!

Each transition is like a small miniature template, some intended to be as long as 6 seconds with as many as 7 drop zones in addition to the incoming and outgoing clip. The use of transitions instead of a full length template makes for easier rearrangement/removal of sections, simpler timing of drop zones,  and greater control over speed/duration. Each drop zone can be scaled and positioned with on-screen controls and can be tinted/colorized to match the color palette of any company, logo or look.

INSTALLATION
Double click the DMG file to mount the installer and agree to the license.

Double click the installer pkg to install BretFX Parks & Re-Creation Split Screen Transitions. The 7 transitions will appear in the FCPX Transitions browser listed under BretFX Split Screen Transitions.

HOW TO USE
In FCP X, navigate to the Transitions browser and find BretFX Parks & Re-Creation Split Screen Transitions. Choose a transition and drag it to the cut point between two clips in your timeline. The transitions are designed to work as stand alone transitions, but if you’re in the mood to recreate the famous TV show open, you can also use them in order, one after the other, back to back to create a 30 second open.  But make sure you have lots of space on each side of the transition when putting it into place because the ones with more drop zones are much longer than others and while they default to the right length, if there isn’t space they’ll simply shorten and fill what space they can.

CONTROLS
Select the transition in the timeline and open the inspector, if it isn’t already. The controls here offer the opportunity to change the border color and width, turn the text on/off, tint the drop zone images, as well as control their position and scale with on screen controls.

TEXT (or TITLE)
Text Option
Check the optional text box to enable the text/title.  Each transition has one  or more text zones that mimic the placement of the titles in the show open.  Enter your text in the text field or directly in the canvas by double clicking the temporary text. FCPX doesn’t offer the full text parameters pane to control text in transitions, so font, color and size controls are provided. If you need more elaborate control like kerning, you can create your text in a standard text title, then copy that text in the viewer (not inspector), reselect the Split Screen transition, and paste the text in the viewer.  (A tip – if you right click in the viewer you can choose whether you want to paste as raw text or keep the formatting.) However if you paste pre-formatted text, the font, color, and size controls will disappear.  You can control the position of the text in the viewer by dragging it in the canvas.

Note
If you do plan on recreating the TV open, you’ll find the text field of Split Screen 01 will match up with the text field of Split Screen 02 by default.  To make the text cross over between those  two transitions, you’ll need to precisely put the same text into both fields and ensure that the transitions are back to back to avoid a flash frame.  The title in Split Screen 01 animates on like the show open.

Text Background
Check this box to optionally replace a drop zone with a solid background.  Which drop zone varies by transition as it follows the design of the TV open.

Text Background Color
Click the color swatch and use the Apple color picker, or click the down triangle next to the color swatch and drag, to choose the background color.

BORDER
Border Width
Controls the width of the border.

Border Color
Click the color swatch and use the Apple color picker, or click the down triangle next to the color swatch and drag, to choose a border color.

DROP ZONES
The drop zones are numbered in the viewer and color coordinated to make it easy to select.  The default tint color chip in the inspector matches the color of the drop zone.  Click on the drop zone, then click on the clip you wish to use in the browser or timeline.  The spot you click on the clip relates directly to what portion of the clip is used in the drop zone. When you have your selection, click “apply clip” at the bottom of the viewer. To clear the drop zone, click the X next to the drop zone.

On Screen Controls
Each drop zone has two on screen controls that control position and size of the drop zone.  Drag the small ring in the center to place.  Drag the larger ring toward or away from the smaller ring to scale.  Because of the quirky design of the transitions, some zones show only a small portion of a clip, except during the transition where a larger portion of the clip may show.  Take care to make sure you don’t expose the edges of a clip during the transition.

Pan & Scale
These control the placement of the image within it’s own boundary. Because of the quirky design of the transitions, some zones show only a small portion of a clip, except during the transition where a larger portion of the clip may show.  Take care to make sure you don’t expose the edges of a clip during the transition.

Position and Size
These control the position and size of the drop zone itself.  They are also the same parameters controlled by the on screen controls. These provide more precise control than the on screen controls.  As well, the on screen controls may be not always be easily accessible. Because of the quirky design of the transitions, some zones show only a small portion of a clip, except during the transition where a larger portion of the clip may show.  Take care to make sure you don’t expose the edges of a clip during the transition.

Tint

To colorize a drop zone, check the tint box. Use the Color selection and the standard apple or FCPX color selection tools to choose a tint color.  You can adjust the amount of color added with the intensity controls.  Full intensity provides a monotone color and is the default.
