Word Cloud takes 10 words or phrases, expands them into a cloud, and rotates them around your source object or text in 3D space. You control the cloud size, rotation direction, speed and position. A simple check box turns off the cloud and returns to text edit mode where you can more easily change text color and style.

Usage Tips: Word Cloud is a title/adjustment layer hybrid that affects all layers below it.  As such, it’s necessary to add it as a title above the source you wish to surround in words, and group it and Word Cloud together as a compound clip (option+G). If you don’t want to compound them, but have a background gradient or video you want unaffected, you can alternatively place the  background layer as the very top layer, and then choose “behind” as the blend mode for that layer in the inspector.

INSTRUCTIONS

To Apply
In FCP X, navigate to the Titles browser and find BretFX Word Cloud. Drag the BretFX Word Cloud title over an area of the timeline you wish to apply the effect to. Word Cloud is a title/adjustment layer hybrid that affects all layers below it.  As such, it’s necessary to add it as a title above the source you wish to surround in words, and group it and Word Cloutd together as a compound clip (option+G). If you don’t want to compound them, but have a background gradient or video you want unaffected, you can alternatively place the  background layer as the very top layer, and then choose “behind” as the blend mode for that layer in the inspector.

Using the Controls

Edit Text Mode This turns off the cloud so that you can more easily select and stylize your text in the viewer. You’ll need to have the playhead at least 11 frames into the effect because the 10 lines build and are parsed in the first 10 frames.  This isn’t seen when edit text mode is unchecked.

Text Enter 10 lines of text here, each followed by the return key.  Word Cloud parses the 10 elements from these 10 lines.  If you need a phrase to be 2 lines because it’s too long, your only option is to select the second half of the phrase, switch over to the standard FCPX text tab  in the inspector, and adjust the baseline to lower the second half of the phrase.  To move it left or right under the first half, move the cursor over to just before the first word of the 2nd half of the phrase and enter a space and adjust the kerning.  You’ll likely need to enter numbers way beyond the slider controls. It’s a hack, but it allows Word Cloud to display multi line items along with single line items.

Vertical Words Check this box to display vertical words in your cloud.

Horizontal Words Check this box to display horizontal words in your cloud.

Y Rotate Speed controls the speed of the rotation around the Y axis (L to R).  0 for none.  20 if you’re trying to create a word tornado. Extending the length of the affected clip or title doesn’t change the speed of the rotation.

X Rotate Speed controls the speed of the rotation around the X axis (up and down).  0 for none.  20 if you’re trying to create a word combine. Extending the length of the affected clip or title doesn’t change the speed of the rotation.

Z Rotate Speed controls the speed of the rotation around the Z axis (circular motion).  0 for none.  20 if you’re trying to bore a large hole in your screen. Extending the length of the affected clip or title doesn’t change the speed of the rotation.

Width controls the width of the cloud rotation around the Y axis.

Height controls the width of the cloud rotation around the X axis.

Rotation is a useful control if you’d like to either rotate the cloud precisely with keyframes on any of the 3 axis instead of using the speed controls , OR set a start rotation for the effect.  If you’re not rotating the effect at all this would also be useful for tweaking the look of the cloud.

Position controls the placement of the cloud in 3D space.

Ease In/Out adds easing to both the start and stop of the cloud.  However the cloud is on a set 30 second loop, so if your cloud is less than 30 seconds you won’t see the easing into the end of the rotation, and if your cloud is longer than 30 seconds you’d see it slow to a stop and then slowly start back up again every 30 seconds.  So use the control with those caveats. If you need ramping or more speed control, then compounding the entire clip/effect and adding FCPX speed controls to the compound is suggested.

As usual I created this effect out of a need for a particular project.  It definitely has room for updates over time.  So please email any questions, suggestions or bug reports.

Thanks for your support.  Have fun!
